Purpose

The Judicial Branch of the Student Government Association is also referred to as the Judicial Board. The Judicial Board is presided over by the Chief Justice and has jurisdiction over all cases involving student governance and reserves the right to review the decisions of the Student Government Association.

Powers and Jurisdiction

The Judicial Board is responsible for administering all hearings concerning and pertaining to the equity and equality of all Student Government Association business and club affairs.

The Judicial Board reserves the power to interpret the Student Government Association Constitution and Bylaws, the bylaws for student organizations, and established Marist College rules and regulations.

The Judicial Board has jurisdiction over cases involving student governance, such as removal of student officers, determination of Student Government Association and club election validity, and other student governance issues, and reserves the right to review the decisions of the Student Government Association.

The Judicial Board has jurisdiction over appeals of any parking violations issued to students by the Marist College Office of Safety and Security.

The Judicial Board makes recommendations to the Student Government Association on college norms and procedures as found in the student handbook.

Composition

The Judicial Board consists of five members: the Chief Justice, three Resident Justices, and one Commuter Justice. All members are appointed by the Student Body President upon confirmation by the Senate.

The Chief Justice serves a "life" term and remains in office while a student at Marist College, or upon resignation or impeachment and removal by the Senate. Resident and Commuter Justices serve terms of twelve consecutive months and are eligible for reappointment.
