I was issued a parking ticket by the Office of Safety and Security. What can I do?

First, keep in mind that your timeframe to appeal a ticket is ten (10) calendar days, so it is important to act promptly so that you can submit an appeal on time.

Pickup a Parking Ticket Appeal Form in the Student Government Association Office (Student Center 347) or Office of Safety and Security (Donnelly Hall).

Actually READ the Parking Ticket Appeal Form! It contains everything that needs to be done to correctly submit a properly completed appeal.

The appeal form clearly states the basis on which you may appeal a ticket. It is very important you choose a basis for appeal and then support it with your written statement and evidence. If you feel you have a basis for appeal as stated on the form, you should continue by completing the appeal form. If you know you are guilty or don't have any basis for appeal, please don't waste your time or ours by appealing anyway, as such appeals are always denied.

Again, we can't stress enough the importance of reading the Parking Ticket Appeal Form and following the directions provided to properly submit an appeal.

The burden of proof rests with you, the appellant. If you make a claim that can be verified by documentary evidence (i.e. proof of registration, letter from a physician, handicap permit, witness statements, etc.) you MUST include this evidence with your appeal. Simply saying, "can be provided upon request", or "call this number for verification" is unacceptable and will most likely result in the denial of your appeal due to insufficient evidence.

Completed appeals should be put in the Chief Justice's mailbox in the Student Government Association Office (Student Center 347). Make sure the parking ticket and typed written statement are securely attached to the appeal form. Also, be sure to note the parking ticket number for your reference when using the Online Parking Ticket Appeal Status Notification System.

How long do I have to appeal a parking ticket?

Parking tickets must be appealed within ten (10) calendar days from the date of ticket issuance. Past due parking ticket appeals will be summarily denied.

I parked illegally, but I had my "flashers" on, only did so for X minutes, had to unload groceries, etc. That's okay, right?

The Marist College Campus Parking and Vehicle Usage policy states that students are only allowed to park in their assigned lots. Any vehicle not parked in its assigned lot is subject to ticketing. However, the Office of Safety and Security has implemented the following procedures to be followed if you are dropping off bulk items and must park near your residence area:

  1. Call the Security office at x2222 or 845-471-1822 and tell the dispatcher you are unloading items.
  2. Obtain a log number from the dispatcher. Also ask for the dispatcher's name and badge number. Write this information down!
  3. You have 15 minutes to unload and leave.
  4. If you receive a ticket during this 15 minute timeframe, bring the ticket to the Security office with your log number. The ticket will be voided after verification of the log number and time.

My parking ticket appeal was denied. What should I do now?

The decisions of the Judicial Board regarding parking ticket appeals are final and cannot be considered, discussed, or appealed further. You should go to the Office of Student Financial Services, located in Donnelly Hall, to pay the fine.

I am the president of a club that was sanctioned by the Student Government Association Council of Club Affairs. What can I do?

Any sanction, up to and including club charter revocation, imposed on a club by the Student Government Association Council of Club Affairs may be appealed to the Student Government Association Judicial Board by club leadership on the grounds of faulty procedure or prejudice. A letter of request for appeal must be submitted to the Chief Justice within fourteen (14) normal academic term days from the date the sanction was rendered. You should consult Section 6 of Article V of the Student Government Association Bylaws for further information. Contact the Chief Justice immediately if you have any questions regarding this appeal process.

I think Candidate X violated the Student Government Association Election Guidelines. What should I do?

You should immediately contact the Student Government Association Elections Commissioner.
