Club By-Laws

Article I      Official Name

 The Official name of this organization shall be Marist College Social Work Association

Article II      Purpose

The purpose of this organization shall be to promote Social Work knowledge, values, and skills among the members of Marist College and the surrounding community. The organization shall dedicate itself to working in various social systems to ensure that the target population’s basic human needs are being met.

Article III      Membership

                 1. Classes of members/ Qualification for membership

                        This organization shall be open to all students at Marist College.

                 2. Financial Obligations of Members

There are no dues for membership. The organization receives funding through submittal of a budget to SGA. The officers shall agree upon the events for the upcoming semester and request an appropriate amount of funds from the Financial Board.

                 3. Provisions for Registration

In the event that an officer resigns, he/she must submit a letter tendering his/her resignation from the position to the remaining officers. If no elections can be held at the time an officer resigns, the club advisor may appoint an officer to the position.

Article IV      Officers

                 Section 1.  President

The president shall chair the meetings of the organization, set the meeting time, and plan the agenda. He/she shall be responsible for planning and organizing events, with the assistance of the other officers. The president shall also meet with the organization’s Faculty Advisor, in order to best fulfill the needs of the club. The president is responsible for approving committee formations, and shall appoint committee chairs as needed.

                 Section 2.  Vice President

The vice president shall assist the president with his/her Presidential duties; and shall assume the office of acting president in the absence of the president. He/she shall also be responsible for sending out all letters of invitation and gratification to all guest speakers.

                 Section 3.  Secretary

The secretary shall record the minutes of each meeting and report the previous minutes of the last meeting. He/she shall also be responsible for recording an attendance list from each meeting. He/she is responsible for assigning priority points to each of the members at the end of the semester. He/she will also be responsible for receiving and processing nominations and ballots.

                 Section 4.  Treasurer

The treasurer shall keep and maintain the organizations budget. He/she shall have a full knowledge of all paperwork connected with finances, and shall ensure that the proper paperwork is completed in an appropriate time period.

 Article V      Elections

1.  In order to run for an officer position, the individual must have been an active member of the club for at least one semester.

2.  Elections shall be held in the beginning of the spring semester as designated by the Activities Calendar. There will be a nomination process which takes place at a meeting a week before the elections shall be held. As stated, the election shall take place the next meeting following the nominations. The terms shall run from the period following Club Leadership transition until the next transition (approx. April-April)

3.  The new officer elects shall shadow his/her respective officers commencing directly after elections.

4.  In the event of a vacant office a special election shall be held to fill that office; it shall follow the same procedure as a regular spring election.

5.  Active membership is defined as attendance and participation in the club for at least one semester.

Active VI      Meetings

General meetings shall be held monthly, as specified by the officers. There must be a quorum for business to take place. A quorum constitutes 2/3 of the membership. 

Article VII      Executive Board

At a minimum, officers will meet bi-weekly to discuss club affairs.

Article VIII      Committees

Committees shall be formed as needed, with the approval of the club President in order to fulfill a necessary function.

Article IX     Parliamentary Procedure

Unless suspended, all meetings are run according to Robert’s Rules of Order, Newly Revised.

Article X      Amendment of By-Laws

Any change or amendment to these By-Laws shall be made through a 2/3 vote of all members in good standing. And revision to these By- Laws is the responsibility of all the officers.

Article XI      Policies and Actions

The club and any individual associated with the club shall abide and conform to all Federal Laws, New York State Laws, all rules and regulations of Marist College, and all directives of SGA. Any violation of the aforementioned criteria may result in disciplinary action taken on the club character.

Article X      Amendment of By-Laws
