Relay For Life
Relay For Life, is a world-wide organization which is held annually in celebration of the lives of people
who have been affected by cancer. It is held to celebrate those who battled cancer and are now fighting back against the disease, to remember those who have passed, and to find a cure to stop this disease once and for all. Marist College sponsors Relay For Life every spring out on the green between the Rotunda and the Library. Students stay up 24 hours in memory of everyone affected by cancer and are separated into different teams, with one person from each team to serve as a representative at all times. It is a fun night and very memorable. It is a privalege for Sigma Sigma Sigma to help take part in such a life-changing event.
Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer into the world’s largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, the American Cancer Society continues to save lives.
Relay For Life has affected the lives of many of us in our Epsilon Upsilon Chapter here at Marist College which is why Relay For Life is such a life-changing event to be a part of. Not only is it a bonding experience between the sisters but it is a night of memories, making new ones and sharing old ones.
