Our Mission Statement
"Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority provides service to collegiate bands, encourages the advancement of women in the band profession, and promotes and enriches an appreciation of band music through recognition, leadership development, and education of its members."
Tau Beta Sigma was created in 1946 and was founded by Wava Banes. Tau Beta Sigma was originally created to promote women in the field of music but also has male members. Tau Beta Sigma is the National Honorary Band Sorority and main goal is to help bands across the nation as well as communities by enriching its members through music.
Iota Alpha - Marist College
The Iota Alpha Chapter here at Marist College was founded on April 21, 2001. Iota Alpha's big sister chapter is Delta Delta from the University of Massachusetts. Arthur Himmelberger, the Marist College Band director and member of the National Honorary Band Fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi, helped the founding sisters of TBS start the colony and continues this day to support the sisters in their devotion to the band. Mr. Himmelberger later became a honorary sister. While the Iota Alpha chapter of Tau Beta Sigma was being colonized Marist College also started a chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. Together both organizations work side by side to promote the band and the music that it performs.
The Iota Alpha Chapter, although new, tries to improve conditions in the band as well as the community. Throughout the years the sisters of the Iota Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma have donated money to various events, donated time and materials to a women's crisis center, and provided service to the band through guidance and social events. The Iota Alpha sisters today are planning many new events and fundraising ideas for the future and hope to gain more sisters who love the band as much as they do.
